Rock Hill Winery and DuPont Estate Vineyards
Rock Hill Winery began two generations ago in Sonoma Valley. The original DuPont family vineyard was located off Highway 12 near Madrone Road, next to the Valley of the Moon Winery. North of San Pablo Bay, the original vineyard was in an area of Sonoma Valley that narrows north of the Carneros region. This region of Sonoma Valley is known as a banana belt because of the warm weather due to Sonoma Mountain(approximately 2,467 feet), which blocks cooler weather from the Sonoma Coastline.
It is here where the current owner of Rock Hill Winery, Don DuPont, became passionate about viticulture and winemaking. Don DuPont worked as a general contractor and subcontractor for many large wineries in Napa and Sonoma County during the 1980's and 1990's. This was a time when wine production exploded in California and this region became known world wide for quality wine.
Don DuPont worked on construction projects that pertained to all phases of wine production for the following facilities:

Years of experience in construction, as well as doing construction projects for commercial wineries, gave the second generation DuPont Family winemaker commercial experience that was invaluable when designing Rock Hill Winery’s facilities, cellar, crush pad, vineyard, and irrigation system.
In 2007, Don planted a Sonoma County vineyard on a hillside of rich red volcanic soil in the Mayacamas Range that divides Napa and Sonoma Valley. In 2009, the property was sold. This vineyard continues to produce amazing Petite Sirah, which is still a family favorite.
In 2009, the DuPont Family relocated to Placer County to build DuPont Estate Vineyards using vines from Sonoma County that flourished in the warm weather Foothills of Placer County. Then in 2011 the property for the new home of Rock Hill Winery was acquired.
The winery was located against the side of a steep hill in the Loomis Basin. Overlooking thousands of new Sonoma vines with magnificent views of the snow capped Sierra Nevada mountains to the east. The new location has a special history dating back to the 1880’s when the Silvera Family farmed the land and had vineyards before the prohibition. Historical records reflect that there were as many as 1,200 vineyards in Placer County prior to prohibition, more than Napa and Sonoma Counties combined. In 1920, when the Federal government put the 18th Amendment in effect, the market for wine grapes were all but eliminated and vineyards were taken out and replaced with fruit orchards. In 1955, the John Bono Family purchased the forty-acre ranch and continued agriculture on the parcel until it was sold in 2011 to the DuPont Family. The ranch was in disrepair and needed new energy to be revived. After more than three years of daily backbreaking work, the property became an amazing jewel of the Loomis Basin. One hundred and twenty- five years of agriculture and livestock on this land has produced rich black soil containing mineral-rich decomposed granite. This soil and weather provides ideal living conditions for Rock Hill Winery’s 7,000 vines from nine varietals of bench-grafted Sonoma County rootstock. The vines produce perfect fruit with ideal acid and sugar (brix) for the production of amazing wines.
